In 2012, Amy Walters made the courageous decision to move to Florida with her three children, leaving behind an abusive marriage in search of a fresh start. As she began rebuilding her life, she discovered the James P. Gills Family YMCA, which quickly became a cornerstone of support for her and her family during difficult times.
Amy first learned about the Gills Y more than 10 years ago when her children started school in Trinity. She joined shortly after, grateful to find a place where her kids could safely interact with other children. Over the years, the YMCA has become an integral part of their lives. Beyond providing childcare and after-school programs, it also gave Amy's children the opportunity to participate in athletics and grow through meaningful experiences, sometimes including tough love. This sense of community and support the YMCA offers has had a lasting impact on her family.
Today, she is a community leader and the publisher of New Port Richey City Lifestyle magazine, a rapidly growing publication she started in 2024.
“I love my YMCA family. They have a staff who really care about you and your family. I attended a prayer breakfast and was blown away by how much the YMCA cares for the community regardless of race, gender or financial status. They genuinely want everyone to feel included and have support,” shares Amy.
Inspired by the support she received, Amy now gives back. Each year, her family donates to seven families through the YMCA’s giving tree holiday program, and they also help raise funds in the community.
“The YMCA has helped shape the lives of my kids through fun times and tough love. They are there for the journey, not just a moment,” notes Amy.
Michael Whitten, Gills Y Executive Director, has worked closely with Amy’s son, Chase, for the last three years. He shares that one of the most meaningful parts of his role is helping teens like him grow into leaders.
Like many young people, Chase, 14, has faced moments of poor judgment, often influenced by peers. Through honest conversations and mentorship by Michael, his mom and YMCA leaders, Chase has been guided back toward his goals.
“Supporting the whole family is a key part of what we do at the YMCA. Through programs, mentorship and consistent communication, we aim to be a partner in each family’s journey. For Chase and his family, that’s meant being present—offering consistent support, structure and guidance,” shares Michael.
“I often tell our teens not to let others define their path. Instead, I encourage them to step into leadership, learn from their mistakes and become the example others can follow. That’s the challenge I gave Chase—to be that leader, to be someone who helps shift the environment around him for the better. Watching Chase grow over the years has been an honor. He has the potential to be a strong leader, and I look forward to seeing the continued impact he’ll have on others as he leans into that role,” says Michael.
Way to go, Chase! We are proud of you.
