More than a workout!

There are many reasons to join the Y - building endurance, losing weight, strengthening your heart. When you join the Y, you’re committing to more than simply becoming healthier. You are supporting the values and programs that strengthen your community. Here's a story about a group of active ladies from the Greater Palm Harbor YMCA that decide to build more than muscle- one stitch at a time.

About a year ago Robin Fremer, a knitter with 60 years of experience, started the group. She leads all levels of ability and like the Y everyone is welcome to give it a try. At the Y, we call this program DIY at the Y-Do it Yourself at the YMCA.

Small groups like this one are led by members who have a particular craft or skill they would like to share.

"First, they learned basic cast on techniques, then knit and purl stitches," said Fremer. Scarves was their first project then fingerless gloves.  The team advanced to cowls and hats, knit in the round, so circular needles were introduced.

In the last year, they have made scarves, fingerless mittens and hats for needy school children.

"We donate our items to Knitters for Charity, who distribute them to various groups," adds Fremer.

Their latest project for charity is Twiddle muffs for patients in nursing homes.  These are crocheted with various colored yarns and then buttons and beads and fuzzy balls are attached before sewing into a muff.  Patients are given these when they're in wheelchairs and provide warmth and sensory stimulation.

The ladies' biggest project is a knitted afghan.  Each knitter chose their own colors and various blocks are done from simple to complicated. In addition, they have learned to crochet and are making vests, tank tops and shells that can be worn in warmer weather.

One or two Y members have even dropped by with projects, knitted, embroidery, and needlepoint and received help from the group.

They would love to see you join the group. They meet on Tuesdays, 12-1:30 p.m. in either the lobby or the classroom.
