Spring break at the YMCA of the Suncoast looks a little different than what you traditionally think a break looks—in the best way possible.
Across our association, families spent their week building confidence, learning lifesaving skills and having fun in the water during our Safety Around Water Week. Designed to help children stay safe while enjoying one of Florida’s greatest resources, this impactful program continues to make a difference in communities we serve.
Throughout the week, children participated in hands-on lessons focused on essential water safety skills. From learning how to safely enter and exit the water to understanding what to do in an emergency, each moment in the pool helped build confidence and awareness.

While spring break programming has wrapped at many of our branches, the impact continues. Our Citrus County program is still underway, extending these critical lessons and ensuring even more children have the opportunity to gain skills that could save their lives.
“In a state like Florida, water safety isn’t optional—it’s essential,” said Garrett Adkins, Senior Director of Branch Operations and Association Aquatics Advisor. “Safety Around Water gives kids the skills and confidence they need to be safer in and around water, and that confidence can make all the difference.”
In Florida, where water is part of everyday life, programs like Safety Around Water are more than just swim lessons. They are a vital investment in the safety and wellbeing of our community. When children feel confident in and around water, families feel more at ease and our communities grow stronger.
At the YMCA of the Suncoast, we are committed to expanding access to water safety education so every child has the chance to learn, grow and stay safe.
Because when it comes to water safety, every lesson matters—and every child deserves the opportunity to learn.
