Did You know?
Developing the reading and literacy skills of a child is critical, especially in their early years of education. In Citrus County, current data shows that 70% of students are economically disadvantaged, qualifying for free or reduced lunch. As this percent increases, so does the number of students who arrive at school with gaps in letter recognition skills, phonics skills and basic reading skills.
What the YMCA is Doing to Help
The YMCA of Citrus County has a program with a targeted focus to help bridge learning gaps, known as the Academic Enrichment Program. This program supports the district's elementary's schools with assistance from The United Way of Citrus County, the Black Diamond Foundation, the U.S. Family Foundation, the Lamb Family, Crystal River Rotary, Inverness Kiwanis Club, State Representative Ralph Massullo and in collaboration with the Citrus County School District. By working with the school administration, the YMCA can identify students needing additional remediation and ensure they are getting the intervention they need to improve their reading skills, and lessen their chance of being retained in the 1st grade.
