This summer, campers at YMCA Camp Coast had a special opportunity to take part in Reading with the Rays. This incentive-based literacy program encourages students to read for at least 24 hours over the summer to help prevent learning loss. In partnership with LiFT Academy, YMCA Camp Coast welcomed Tampa Bay Rays superstar outfielder, Jake Mangum, for a memorable day of reading, connection and fun. Players and campers spent time together sharing stories and laughter, bringing books to life in a meaningful and engaging way.
Since its launch in 2007, Reading with the Rays has inspired over 540,000 students to log more than 3.16 million hours of reading collectively. The program is designed to motivate students from Pre-K through 12th grade to stay engaged with reading throughout the summer months, and this event at YMCA Camp Coast brought that mission to life in a powerful and inclusive setting.
The day was especially impactful because all the campers at YMCA Camp Coast are neurodiverse. This specialized summer day camp is thoughtfully designed for children with autism and developmental disabilities, providing a safe, supportive and enriching environment where they can thrive. Camp Coast serves children aged 5–10 and 11–16 who are considered high-functioning on the autism spectrum, offering programming tailored to their unique needs and strengths.
Beth Gettig, Vice President of Youth Development at the YMCA of the Suncoast, touched on the significance of the visit, “We are grateful to the Tampa Bay Rays for partnering with YMCA Camp Coast, in collaboration with LiFT Academy and sharing their time to read with our neurodiverse campers. Moments like these go beyond reading; they show our campers that they are seen, valued and supported by their community. It’s a meaningful experience that leaves a lasting impact on everyone in attendance!”
This event showcased the power of connection, community and inclusive programming. For the campers at YMCA Camp Coast, it wasn’t just about reading, it was about feeling recognized, celebrated and included in a shared love of learning! Big thanks to the Tampa Bay Rays and LiFT Academy for making this day so special. Our campers are still smiling!
