Course Description:

This course provides training to individuals who hold a current lifeguard certification. Participants passing this course will become re-certified as a 2011 YMCA Lifeguard through the YMCA of the USA. They will also become re-certified in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Oxygen Administration through the American Safety and Health Institute. An 80% is required to pass all written tests and 100% is required for all practical. Please see prerequisites for more information on requirements. This course covers safety skills, accident prevention, scanning, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills, first aid in aquatic environments, spinal injury management, open water dangers, legal responsibilities, pool maintenance basics, and how to get a lifeguarding job.

  

Prerequisites:

Participants must hold a current 2011 YMCA Lifeguard Certification, CPR Professional Rescuer, Oxygen, and First Aid certifications. 16 years of age or older; be able to pass the physical competency requirements: Phase 1- tread water for 2 minutes (Legs only) and swim 100 yards of front crawl; Phase 2- Swim 50 yards of each (Front crawl with head up, sidestroke, breaststroke, breaststroke head up, and elementary backstroke kick) and perform a feet first surface dive and swim underwater for 15 feet; Phase 3- sprint to an object then perform an arm over arm surface dive for an object, tread water with object for 1 minute, replace object to bottom of pool, sprint remaining length, get out of pool, conduct 100 compressions on mannequin, and then follow directions from instructor. Required completion of Lifeguard and ASHI e-learning prior to class date (print out certificates for credit).

Equipment Requirements:

Swim suit, towel, extra change of clothes, sunscreen, lunch/snacks, Lifeguard Book, hip pack with mask and gloves and whistle
