Welcoming week

Welcoming Week is one of the Y’s most cherished initiatives. It’s a time to strengthen our communities by honoring the unique cultures, backgrounds and perspectives of our neighbors. At the Y, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe, supported and included, especially children.

In programs like our Before and After School Care, children read stories, play games, engage with cultural activities and discussions, and experience firsthand what it means to include others and be included. These moments create joy while planting the seeds of empathy, respect and understanding that last a lifetime.

It is important to teach children at an early age how to build welcoming communities. “Welcoming Week is such a great opportunity to incorporate activities designed to introduce kids to different cultures, backgrounds and perspectives. This helps them develop empathy and a deeper understanding of others. These are skills that are essential for building respectful and welcoming communities,” said Beth Gettig, Vice President of Youth Development at the YMCA of the Suncoast. Her words embody the Y’s mission to create spaces where differences are seen as opportunities for shared growth.

The YMCA strives to create meaningful experiences that go far beyond the walls of our programs. Whether through Welcoming Week activities or daily interactions rooted in our core values, children are consistently learning what it means to respect and embrace others.

You can help us continue this important work by supporting our YMCA youth programs. When you donate to the YMCA, you’re not just investing in activities; you are investing in the next generation of leaders, peacemakers and community builders!
