It’s a Twin Thing

Many twins share a special connection or an unspoken bond that makes them especially close. Whether this is due to nature or nurture, twins often experience the same tendencies, instincts and feelings.

This was the case with Sandy Reierson MASH Coordinator at John Geigle YMCA and her twin sister Susan.

Susan and Sandy shared a special connection even though Susan was born with significant handicaps.

“Growing up I was always around people with disabilities and felt very comfortable around them. I love that [they often] don’t have any inhibitions and are free to truly be themselves,” shares Sandy.

Unfortunately, Susan passed away 20 years ago, but Sandy continues to honor her sister’s memory by working with the Mainstream Adults Sharing Hope (MASH)

“Working with the MASH members makes me feel close to my sister. I know she would have loved the group,” shares Sandy.

MASH is a program provided to individuals 18 years of age and older to improve their cognitive, physical and emotional abilities. There are currently 30-50 MASH members who attend bi-weekly Friday events held at the John Geigle YMCA and in the community.

Getting Social

The MASH group participates in various events throughout the year, including:

  • Rock Painting – to creatively express themselves
  • Pool Parties – to strengthen water safety skills
  • Talent Shows – to support their friends and let loose
  • Hugging Heroes – to reinforce why and when to call 911
  • Hoedown Dance – to strengthen MASH member relationships

Earlier this month, MASH members proudly sang songs, performed choreographed dance routines and shared stand-up jokes at the talent show event.

The audience was made up primarily of family members and caregivers who were delighted to cheer on this group of adults as they demonstrated their unique skills. While the performances were fun to watch, for many it was an example of the challenges they overcome on a daily basis.

“The MASH members are just like us. At times, they have to be creative and complete tasks in unique ways that work best for them, but they always get the job done,” shares Sandy.
