On October 18, young athletes gathered at the Citrus Memorial Health Foundation YMCA for the 2026 Citrus County YMCA Youth Triathlon. While the event challenged participants to swim, bike and run, the experience offered something beyond the finish line: an opportunity to build confidence, practice perseverance and discover what they can accomplish.

The USA Triathlon-sanctioned event welcomed 163 young athletes, a 26% increase from 129 participants in 2025. Younger participants completed a 100-yard swim, 1.5-mile bike ride and half-mile run, while older participants tackled a 200-yard swim, 3-mile bike ride and one-mile run.

Throughout the course, YMCA staff, volunteers and families cheered on participants, especially those who needed extra encouragement. From helping young swimmers navigate the water to celebrating each athlete crossing the finish line, the event demonstrated the power of determination and a supportive environment.

For many children, crossing the finish line represented a personal achievement, whether they were trying something new, overcoming a challenge or reaching a goal they had worked toward.

Through the Youth Triathlon, the YMCA of the Suncoast encourages young people to develop healthy habits, embrace new challenges and discover a lifelong appreciation for physical activity. It's one of the many ways the Y helps children grow both on and off the racecourse.
