As temperatures rise and families head to the pool, lake or beach, the YMCA of the Suncoast is committed to ensuring everyone has the skills they need to stay safe in and around the water. May is National Water Safety Month, making it the perfect time to highlight the Y’s ongoing dedication to drowning prevention through a variety of life-saving programs and trainings that help families become water smart from the very start.
Our Annual Association Aquatics Training is one of the most impactful examples of this commitment. On Saturday, May 17, nearly one hundred of our branch aquatics staff from Citrus to Pinellas County came together to sharpen their lifeguarding and water safety skills. Guided by experienced Aquatics Directors and certified Lifeguard Instructors, this training reinforces the Y’s high standards in safety and preparedness.
“We want to ensure our staff are fully equipped to support our YMCA members not just within our facilities, but wherever they may encounter water,” said Garrett Adkins, the Director of Operations for Citrus YMCA. “This training helps our teams stay confident, competent and ready to act when it matters most.”
The Y’s water safety efforts go beyond staff preparedness. Our infant FLOAT program is a life-saving initiative that teaches even our youngest swimmers essential survival techniques, such as how to float, roll onto their backs and navigate to the pool’s edge until help arrives. These foundational skills not only build confidence but also prepare children to respond calmly and effectively in the event of an emergency.
In addition to FLOAT, the YMCA of the Suncoast offers group and private swim lessons for all ages—from children as young 6-months to adults looking to gain confidence or improve technique. Group lessons provide a supportive, peer-based learning environment, while private sessions offer individualized instruction tailored to each swimmer’s goals. No matter your age or experience level, our certified instructors are here to help you feel safe, capable and confident in the water.
For teens and adults seeking structured training and a deeper connection to the water, the YMCA of the Suncoast also offers a YMCA Swim Team and Master’s Swim Program. Each program combines organized workouts, competitions and clinics to help improve stroke technique, build endurance and enjoy the camaraderie of a team. It’s a powerful blend of fun, fitness, and friendship—because swimming should be something you enjoy at every age.
