Children wearing 'KIDS POWER' shirts at Skycrest

Kids Power in action at Skycrest Elementary School

It’s about empowering kids with healthy habits while having loads of fun. It’s Kids Power! An afterschool enrichment program offered in partnership with BayCare Health System, the initiative educates youth on building healthy nutritional and physical activity habits early.

Piloted in the spring of 2023, Kids Power “introduces and reinforces healthy habits such as learning about the five food groups and teaches vital safety skills, which improve overall physical and social well-being. Plus, the program reinforces the importance of daily physical activity,” notes Katherine Janus, Ph.D., Community Wellness Program Director, YMCA of the Suncoast.

Taking place across all three Tampa Bay YMCA Associations: the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA, YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg and YMCA of the Suncoast, Kids Power was launched last spring. The program and classes are taught by wellness and safety specialists at school.

At the YMCA of the Suncoast, an estimated 300 children have participated across six schools in Pinellas and Pasco counties so far.

“The Y and BayCare have a great relationship and are partners in several healthy living programs, but this was a new opportunity for serving youth. The program has been well-received by all involved - kids, parents, and Y staff,” Katherine adds.
