Expanding Water Safety Through Adaptive Swim Lessons

The YMCA of the Suncoast is helping make water safety more accessible by expanding adaptive swim lessons for children with autism, sensory sensitivities and motor challenges. Made possible through a partnership with the Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County, this specialized program provides individualized instruction designed to help every child build confidence and develop life-saving water safety skills.

Certified instructors use therapy-based techniques to meet each child's unique sensory, physical and behavioral needs while creating a supportive environment where children can learn at their own pace. The program focuses on foundational survival skills first, helping participants gain the confidence needed to safely enjoy the water.

"We want to give them those survival skills first," said Taylor Dickson, Aquatics Director at the John Geigle YMCA. "If a child falls in, they can maintain their float and move to the side of the pool."

By removing barriers to swim instruction and expanding access to life-saving education, the YMCA continues its commitment to strengthening the community and ensuring more children have the opportunity to stay safe in and around the water. Together with the support of the Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County, this partnership is creating lasting impact for families across our community.
