Kids Power at the YMCA.

The YMCA Kids Power program, proudly supported by BayCare, is a vibrant and impactful initiative designed to help children develop lifelong healthy habits through fun, hands-on activities that promote physical fitness, good nutrition and overall wellness.

Led by trained YMCA staff, the program uses structured exercise, interactive games and engaging lessons about healthy eating to empower kids with the knowledge and tools they need to make positive choices for both their bodies and minds.

Children enrolled in our Before and After School programs, as well as our Summer Camps, have the opportunity to participate in the Kids Power program. Recently, some of our campers got creative by making delicious and imaginative “vegetable people” as part of their Kids Power snack activity. This activity was an enjoyable and educational way to explore healthy foods. Reinforcing healthy habits year-round is essential, as these early lessons serve as the foundation for a lifetime of wellness.

One key topic our campers learn about each summer is hydration. Hydration is a vital but often overlooked component of health. In Florida’s intense summer heat, staying hydrated isn’t just helpful; it’s essential. Through the Kids Power program, children are taught how to recognize signs of dehydration, understand the importance of drinking water regularly and choose hydrating snacks like fruits and vegetables.

Summer Cruff, Vice President of Healthy Living at the YMCA of the Suncoast, explains, “When kids learn about balanced meals, hydration, sleep and exercise, not just during special events or in health class, they’re more likely to adopt those habits into their daily lives.”

She adds, “At the YMCA, we’re committed to giving our littlest community members the tools they need to succeed, so they can grow into healthy, thriving adults and the Kids Power program is doing exactly that.”
