The Greater Palm Harbor YMCA is bringing a new set of energy and connection to its senior community with the launch of Chair Volleyball. This fun and inclusive class is designed specifically for active older adults and is held every Tuesday and Thursday at 2:30 PM. The class is quickly becoming a favorite among YMCA seniors and a few high schoolers, drawing both familiar faces and new participants.

Karie Arthur, Senior Director of Branch Operations, shares, “We currently have 15-18 participants and get new people to join each week.” She adds, “When the class first started, we didn’t have enough people to play a full game. We ended up asking a few of the high schoolers to come play with us. It’s been over a month now, and they are still coming into play.”

Chair Volleyball offers all the excitement of traditional volleyball, with modifications that make the game accessible and safe for participants of varying mobility levels. Players remain seated while volleying a lightweight beachball over a lowered net, allowing everyone to stay active without the impact or strain of standing play. Remaining seated also prevents unnecessary trips or falls and helps participants feel confident, supported and fully engaged in the game. The result is a welcoming environment that emphasizes movement, coordination and connection.

Since its introduction in January, the class has seen steady attendance growth, a testament to both its social appeal and the physical benefits it provides. Senior’s report enjoying not only the opportunity to stay active, but also the sense of camaraderie that develops on the court.

The Greater Palm Harbor YMCA continues to prioritize programs that support healthy aging, and Chair Volleyball is a perfect example of that commitment in action. By offering engaging, low-impact activities that promote physical wellness and social connection, the Y is creating spaces where seniors can thrive at every stage of life.

If you are interested in joining the class, be sure to mark your calendar for March 3 at 2:30 PM!
