It's time for back-to-school!

As the best summer ever comes to a close, it is time to start thinking about what comes next – back to school. After such an action-packed and fun-filled summer at YMCA summer camps, it is important for you and your kids to remain just as active and healthy as you were this summer once school is back in session.

Back to School YMCA of the Suncoast

This year, we want to help you do this. We’d like everyone to add some new items to their back-to-school checklist. Sure, pencils and notebooks are important, but healthy habits are too!  Eating healthy, getting active and giving back are going to keep you and your family feeling good this fall, and what could be more important than that?

Make it a point to include more fruits and veggies in your family’s diet; aim for at least five servings each day. Eating healthy will keep your bodies in tip-top shape and give you all the energy you need to make it through the day. Getting active should also be a necessity for you and your family this fall. Staying active is not only good for your body, but great for your personal development as well. Sports and games help players build a sense of accomplishment, forge new relationships and develop a sense of belonging. Whether it is going to the gym, going for a jog or joining a sports team, don’t forget to keep moving!

Although physical health is important to us, at the Y, we care about more than that. We are devoted to ensuring that children grow up in an environment that fosters positive personal development and helps them to grow into happy and healthy adults. We think that one of the most important ways children can grow is to give back. Young people who volunteer often experience personal growth that benefits them not only in school, but far beyond the classroom.

We have also found that through being a youth volunteer, children experience an enhancement in their personal well-being. Young people who volunteer have reported having lower stress levels, a greater sense of connectedness and a more positive outlook on life in general. Furthermore, volunteering experience is a great addition to any college application. Volunteering demonstrates to colleges that the applicant has a strong work ethic, has gained practical experience outside of a classroom and that they reflect the ideals of good citizenship.

We are just as sad as you are to see the best summer ever coming to an end, but going back to school can be just as fun! Keep these healthy living tips in mind this school year and get ready for the best school year ever!
