The YMCA is the official home of youth basketball programs. We strengthen the community like no other organization can. We have hoops because the Y invented the game played globally on the hardwood in 1891. While teaching at the International YMCA Training School, James Naismith created a game using simple peach baskets and a soccer ball.
YMCA of the Suncoast Youth Basketball is open to kids ages 3-15, with developmental programs, basketball tournaments and leagues running year-round. Our youth sports programs encourage and promote healthy kids, families and communities by placing a priority on family involvement, healthy competition and sportsmanship. The emphasis is on participation over winning. Learning to play as a team and individual development produces fair play and mutual respect for others.
The developmental league play is primarily for ages (6-15) and games are played at various locations depending on your branch location. For example, our games at the Greater Palm Harbor Branch are played at Palm Harbor Middle School. Games at the Greater Ridgecrest Branch in Largo are held at the branch and they are co-ed!
Age, grade and skill level determine team assignments. Volunteers coach our teams and all kids play. Our leagues are up to nine weeks long. Teams practice and play during the week and most games are refereed by Y staff.
Change lives... Volunteer and become a coach!
Parents are encouraged to be more than mere spectators, by contributing their time as volunteer coaches - as well as being their kid's greatest fan. We are always in need of great coaches, willing to make a difference in the lives of today's youth. Your time is our most valuable asset.
