Getting Started Classes
Congratulations on choosing to make a healthy lifestyle change, and selecting the James P. Gills Family YMCA to help you on your way! Our staff and members are available to provide you with all of the tools for a lasting lifestyle change: caring facilitators, group support, relationships and healthy activities. By combining all of these elements, we create the supportive environment that we all need when seeking to make lasting changes in our lives. The groups have been designed for the person who is Getting Started.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA
The YMCA of the USA and the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) has formed a partnership to look for opportunities to provide meaningful and successful wellness options for cancer survivors.
As we come to the beginning of our collaboration with the LAF, the James P. Gills Family YMCA feels it will have key systems and programs put into place to successfully serve individuals and families affected by cancer.

Nutritional Counseling
Jennifer Shoemaker is a Registered Dietitian and Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist. She has been in the field since 1992 and has worked in a variety of settings, including hospitals, public health, long-term care and fitness centers.
Areas covered:Cardiovascular disease, Diabetes, Weight management, Wellness and Women’s Health
Fee: $44 per hour

Personal Training
Personal training provides specialized one-on-one training by certified instructors to help you meet your fitness needs. Whether you are just beginning an exercise program or need help fine-tuning your current one, personal trainers can help you meet your goals. To register, please contact the member services desk.

Training Outside the Box
Join Bill for this intense class for the advanced exerciser! Training includes plyometric and sports conditioning exercises utilizing body weight, medicine balls, tires and other sports drill equipment. This non traditional class will offer the advanced exerciser the challenge they have been looking for. Classes must have four participants enrolled in order to run with 10 participant max.
Age: 18 and up
Fee/monthly: $65 Facility Members only
Schedule: May, Mondays & Wednesdays, 11:00 am - 12 noon OR 6 - 7:00 pm
Indoor Cycling
Group exercise classes on stationary bikes. You may sign up 72 hours in advance. Phone calls accepted. Space is limited. Arrive 15 minutes before class begins. Indoor cycling orientation required prior to participation.
Specialized Sports Training
Specialized Sports Training is an intensive program that focuses on running, flexibility, agility, speed and strength techniques. Specialized Sports Training incorporates sprinting drills, plyometrics, cycling and dynamic stretching in order to build strength in the ankles, legs, and core, while becoming more flexible to prevent injuries. This is perfect for the athlete or person wanting to take their fitness to the next level. Sports specific drills will compliment sports such as volleyball, football, basketball, baseball, golf and others.
Specialized Sports Training is taught by YMCA Certified Personal Trainers and is available to individuals or teams up to 6 participants, minimum of 4 per team needed. For more information contact Marie Cervantes-Roth at 727-375-9622 or mcervantes-roth@suncoastymca.org.

* Fee may be divided between team participants. For example, 2x/week for 4 weeks $330 would cost a team of six only $55 each.
BAM! (Barbells And Men)
Getting bored with the same old weight routine or not sure your performing them correctly? This 4 week course can help you get on the right track. It will provide insights on strength training using free weights, proper safety and lifting techniques.
Fee: $65

Massage Therapy
The James P. Gills YMCA massage program is designed to offer members a quality environment in which they may experience the benefits of balancing mind, body and spirit. We offer Relaxation to Deep Tissue massages. Our massage therapists are dedicated to the well-being of each YMCA member.

Prenatal/Postnatal class
The Prenatal class is a group training program designed to safely guide prenatal women through strength training. This group of 10 or less allows pregnant women to build friendships as well as stay fit during their pregnancy. Lectures on varying topics will also be scheduled.
Continue your strength training with the Postnatal class! Infants 6 weeks to 6 months are welcome to class in a stroller or carrier. This group of 10 or less allows women to build friendships and regain strength. Lectures by area professionals will round out our spirit/mind/body connection.

Body Flex
This is resistance training set to dynamic music, performed in a group setting, taught by knowledgeable, motivational instructors. Experience the results!
- Increase body composition-less fat, more lean muscle
- Increase metabolism-burn more calories all day long due to less fat and more muscle
- Improve body tone, muscle definition, strength and endurance
Each member works from an individual station, which consists of a step and the variable weight barbell. You have a weight capacity ranging from 3 to 63 pounds. Each member uses weights appropriate to their individual fitness level. The program is designed with 10 segments: a warm-up, cool down, and 8 songs - each one devoted to a specific muscle group.
Women on Weights - W.O.W.
Not sure free weights are for you? During this 4-week course, a certified Personal Fitness Coach will guide you through a program to get you acquainted with free weight training. The course will provide insights on strength training using free weights, proper safety and lifting techniques. We guarantee you'll walk away with new and effective ideas. Minimum four participants needed to run the class. Check the class schedule for upcoming dates and times available.

Schedule: Two times a week, for four weeks

Teen Orientation
This is an orientation to teach teens the proper use of the equipment in the Fitness Center. Upon completion of this program, teens are allowed to work out in the fitness center. Our teen members will be given a yellow clip upon successful completion of orientation. This clip is to be worn while using the fitness center. Wear workout attire and bring a towel. Sign-up at the member services desk.

Pre-Teen and Teen Orientation Schedule
Fit4AllKids
Ages 8-12 (other ages may be considered on a case-by-case basis) This is an 8-week program, sponsored by All Children's Hospital and the James P. Gills and Clearwater YMCA branches, encouraging children to do their personal best and reach their own goals for weight loss, weight management and physical activity.
As a part of this program, the James P. Gills and Clearwater Branches will provide memberships to Fit 4 All Kids participants and their families free of charge during the program. Each week, YMCA staff will lead participants through a wide range of fun, low-impact fitness activities while supporting them on their way to a healthier lifestyle.
In addition, members of the All Children's staff will guide discussions on topics such as body image, motivation, restaurant etiquette, stress management and other psychosocial behaviors associated with proper nutrition. [Financial assistance available.]
