Swim & Safety Lessons
The High Point Branch pool is open seasonally from May through October. Swim classes are offered in the Summer during our Summer Camp program hours. Swim classes develop confidence and safety in and around water. The High Point Branch YSplash program is for girls and boys ages 6-12 that attend our summer camp. There is limited space for community participants. The program is FREE and made available through a Pinellas County Recreation grant. The YSplash Swim class follows the guidelines and lesson plan of the YMCA of USA. The program involves five basic components: Personal Safety, Stroke Development, Water Games, Personal Growth and Rescue.
The YMCA does not claim to drown proof a child. Also, we do not teach by forcefully dunking a child underwater.
There will be no make-ups for rain out classes.
All swim classes must have a minimum of 4 participations to hold classes and a max of 25 participants.
Meeting Dates & Times: The class meets once a week on Tuesdays from 11 am to 11:45 am for 10 weeks. Please call the YMCA of the Suncoast-High Point Branch at 727-507-9622 for more information. (No classes on holidays.)
Fee: Free to participants that live in Unincorporated Pinellas County & qualify for free or reduced lunch. Must complete registration form and provide school letter showing qualification for lunch, and proof that they live in unincorporated Pinellas County- a home bill listing parents name and address.
All others that don’t qualify for grant requirements:

Splash Program

The YMCA of the Suncoast, High Point Branch is proud to offer the YMCA Splash program to girls and boys ages 5 to 12. There is limited enrollment so register early. These lessons are designed for beginning swimmers. Students will learn how to be safe around water and have fun while swimming. The program will consist of two 45 minute classes a week for 9 weeks. The ratio will be 10 children per class. Classes will be held at the YMCA of the Suncoast- High Point Branch, 5345 Laurel Place, Clearwater, FL. 33760, 727-507-9622/fax 727-507-0722, email twilliams@suncoastymca.org (if interested). Classes start June 21 and end August 20, 2010. Classes assigned on a first come, first served basis. The goal of the program is to help children learn personal safety in and around the water as well as increase their comfort level through learning basic swimming skills.

REGISTRATION AND PROGRAM IS FREE for Summer Camp Children! There is no cost for these lessons. You must register at the High Point Branch.

This program is for BEGINNER SWIMMERS ONLY. Those who have not taken lessons before.
ATTENDING CLASSES
- Children should bring towel and swim suit. Your child may wish to come dressed to swim.
- Parent or Y staff should escort child into locker room to assist child with dressing and showering.
- Children will be picked up and escorted from the locker room.
- Parents or Y staff can watch the children from a chair off to the side of the pool area.
- Parents or Y staff should return to the locker room a few minutes before the end of class to be ready to assist the child after the class.
- Children will be escorted back into the locker room or their camp group after class.
Class Days & Times:
Monday and Thursday: Co-ed Ages 5-8 | 12 noon-12:45pm
Tuesdays SAP Camp | 12 noon- 12:45pm
Wednesday and Friday Co-ed Ages 9-12 | 12 noon- 12:45pm
pike/Eel (ages 3-5)
Little or no water experience necessary. The following skills are included in class: blowing bubbles, paddle stroke, face in the water, intro to rotary breathing, back floating, diving, work toward swimming without flotation, and safety skills. Class schedule available upon request. Space is limited to 6 children per class offered.
parent/child swim (ages 6 –36 months)
Introductory swim class for parent and child. Learn swim basics and water safety skills with your child. Help your child through the steps of water adjustment to propelling itself through the water. On going monthly classes. Class schedule available upon request. Space is limited to 12 children with their parent’s actively participating in the class.
polliwog/guppy
Beginner class. The following skills are presented at this level: Front glide, flutter kick, paddle stroke with progression to front crawl, rotary breathing, back stroke and safety skills.
Private Swim Lessons
Learn to swim in a more private format with one-on-one time with a certified swim instructor. Register for one lesson, or a package of 3, 5 or 10! Once registered, an instructor will call you and set up days and times for your lessons to fit your needs and the availability of the instructor. Each lesson is 30 minutes in length.

Swim Team
Ages 6-18; The High Point Branch is looking for a volunteer swim coach to create a swim team of swimmers who want to compete. Emphasis is on strokes technique and racing strategies. We hope to compete in a minimum of four swim meets a season. The participants can win trophies, ribbons, and more. There are two levels of Swim Team - Beginning level and Novice level. Beginning level swimmers must be able to swim the front crawl 25 yards with rotary breathing and 25 yards of the back crawl. Novice level swimmers should know the entire competitive swim stroke. Children must be YMCA members to compete in meets.
